Widely regarded as one of Ana María Cumsille’s standout wines, the 2022 Ciprés has been praised for its depth, balance and age-worthiness. As noted by Matthew Luczy of The Wine Advocate, it is “among my favourite wines from Ana María Cumsille” and “a joy to follow in the cellar,” with a suggested drinking window of 2024–2032.
Ciprés Malbec is a striking and deeply expressive wine sourced from extraordinary 200-year-old, ungrafted bush vines in the Ránquil area of Chile’s Itata Valley. The fruit comes from long-time grower Nelson García, whose ancient vineyards lend remarkable depth and energy to this unique Malbec. Hand-harvested at the end of March, the grapes were fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel, followed by around 20 days on the skins. The wine was then aged for 12 months in old barrels, allowing the fruit and vineyard character to take centre stage without overt oak influence.
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby hue with violet reflections. The nose is intense and layered, offering cherry and plum, balsamic notes, gentle spice and subtle floral lift, with an earthy undertone that speaks clearly of its old-vine origins. The palate is fresh yet compact, with juicy red and black fruit framed by granular, refined tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is persistent, elegant and structured, with clear potential to evolve beautifully in bottle.
Ideal with slow-cooked lamb, grilled beef, earthy vegetable dishes or aged hard cheeses.
