This wine is not to be confused with Montepulciano d'Abruzzo! This is made from Sangiovese grapes, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile, which are located around the town of Montepulciano.

Avignonesi was founded in the late middle ages. In 2009 the estate was purchased by Virginie Saverys, a member of one of the oldest shipping related families in Belgium. Since taking on the estate, she has already converted to organic cultivation and has bought several additional vineyards.

It's made from 100% Sangiovese. The fermentation was spontaneous. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration on the skins lasted up to 30 days, depending on the individual lots.

This wine has an intense aromatic profile, with ripe, red plum, pomegranate and damson fruit coming to the fore, and wonderful undertones of sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is generous, and well balanced, with vibrant plum, cherry and damson fruit, seamless tannins and an endless finish.

If you like a good Chianti, this will be right up your street!
