A cult California Chenin from one of their most exciting modern producers. Sourced from the legendary Jurassic Park Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this Chenin comes from old vines rooted in a cool, maritime-influenced site that allows the variety to shine with precision. Fermented with native yeasts and handled gently in the cellar, the wine focuses on purity rather than power.
Founded in 2008 by friends Alex Krause and John Locke, Birichino is based in Santa Cruz and draws heavily on their formative years working with Randall Grahm at Bonny Doon Vineyard. Their name which is Italian for “mischievous”, perfectly reflects their approach: thoughtful, low-intervention winemaking with a playful edge. Championing old vineyards, cool sites and lower alcohols, Birichino sit firmly at the forefront of New Wave California.
The nose is expressive and layered, showing quince, green apple, pear skin and citrus peel, with subtle floral notes and a faintly savoury, woolly edge typical of great Chenin. On the palate, it’s vibrant and mouth-watering, combining crunchy orchard fruit with bright acidity, a gentle phenolic grip and a lightly textured finish that keeps you reaching for another glass. Dry, refreshing and quietly complex.
Excellent with grilled fish, shellfish, pork dishes, or soft cheeses. Also a brilliant match for dishes with a little spice or richness.
