Like all of Pieter’s BLANKbottle creations, Familemoord tells a story that goes beyond grape and terroir, a reminder that every bottle holds both a narrative and a sense of adventure. He sources fruit from nearly 70 vineyards across South Africa, making wines that challenge assumptions and celebrate authenticity. Few wines come with a story as memorable as Familemoord (literally “Family Murder"). The name recalls a day when winemaker Pieter Walser found himself nearly arrested for a crime he didn’t commit, the supposed “murder” of his son. Thankfully, it was all a misunderstanding, later immortalised in a local newspaper headline and now, fittingly, on a bottle of wine.
Beyond the story lies a truly stunning expression of South African Grenache. Sourced from old vines high up in Piekenierskloof, one of the country’s most celebrated sites for this variety, Familemoord 2023 is hauntingly graceful yet full of quiet power. The nose dances with redcurrant, raspberry, and rose petals, underpinned by hints of wild herbs, white pepper, and soft leather. The palate glides effortlessly, silken and poised, balancing pure red fruit with a savoury, mineral edge. The tannins are fine and supple, lending structure without weight, while a subtle crunch of freshness lifts the finish.
If Garnacha from the Gredos mountains in Spain has its admirers, Familemoord is its South African counterpart, ethereal, delicate, yet full of character. Pieter calls it “the most beautiful Grenache we could find,” and it’s hard to disagree.
