Nestled in Spain’s sun-baked Jumilla region, Bodegas Casa de la Ermita has gained a reputation for producing deeply flavoured, terroir-rich wines from old Monastrell vines. Their “Roble” bottling reflects the fruit-forward, expressive side of the estate: fresh, youthful, and full of character. The 2023 edition is sourced from 60-year-old Monastrell vines on rocky, high-altitude soils, planted on their own roots and farmed with precision to preserve vitality and natural aridity.
The grapes were harvested carefully, underwent a cold pre-fermentation to retain intense varietal aromas, and matured in French oak barrels for about three months. This short oak ageing adds subtle complexity without dominating the vibrant fruit. As a result, the wine retains its freshness while offering a soft structure and approachable tannins.
Deep violet-red in the glass, the Roble 2023 opens with vivid aromas of ripe red and black fruit, hints of cocoa, white spices and woodland minerals. On the palate you'll find lush cherry, plum and black berry flavours, underpinned by gentle oak, smooth tannins and a refreshing, slightly saline finish that gives this warm-climate wine surprising crispness.
Ideal with grilled lamb chops, rich stews, cured meats, or aged cheeses. Also a delicious match for tapas and hearty Mediterranean fare.
