The volcanic wines of the Canary Islands have garnered substantial hype and acclaim in recent wines, and the exceptional Piedra Fluida are a thrilling example. A new project began in 2018 on the island of Tenerife, they work with ancient ungrafted vineyards including the highest altitude vines in Europe at 1650 metres altitude. They farm these old vines organic, which helps to benefit vine health as well as reducing soil erosion and water loss, essential on these dry, challenging volcanic soils.

The Blanco is 100% Listan Blanco (aka Palomino in Jerez), from two vineyards between 60-80 years old: Los Frontones at 1650m and Cruz de Tea at 950m. Fermentation is made with the natural yeast in a mixture of stainless steel and large wooden foudre.

This is a very complex and savoury bone dry white wine. The smokiness of volcanic terroir comes through on the nose alongside fennel seed, white pepper, bread dough and lemon zest notes. On the palate it is crisp and focused with lots of citrus fruits and a strong sensation of salinity. Powerful and unique but eminently drinkable at the same time.
