The volcanic wines of the Canary Islands have garnered substantial hype and acclaim in recent wines, and the exceptional Piedra Fluida are a thrilling example. A new project began in 2018 on the island of Tenerife, they work with ancient ungrafted vineyards including the highest altitude vines in Europe at 1650 metres altitude. They farm these old vines organic, which helps to benefit vine health as well as reducing soil erosion and water loss, essential on these dry, challenging volcanic soils.
A cheerful vin de soif with crunchy berry and forest fruit notes, gracefully light on the palate from the white grape aromatics but with great structure given from the old vines and good tannin. A blend of the local Listan Negro red grape co-fermented white Listan Blanco (Palomino).
