Antoine Sunier’s winemaking journey was shaped by two key influences: his older brother Julien Sunier and natural wine pioneer Jean-Claude Lapalu, who he worked with after studying in Beaune. Determined to find vineyards that reflected his philosophy, Antoine sought out organically farmed sites in Régnié and Morgon, with vines averaging at least 45 years old. Working with wild yeasts and minimal sulphur additions, he produces wines that are textured, generous and graceful, allowing the Gamay fruit and the character of the Beaujolais terroir to shine.

Montmerond comes from a vineyard with over 60-year-old vines, farmed organically for many years and rooted in granite and schist soils. It is a particularly concentrated and complex expression of Régnié, with greater depth and weight than many examples of the appellation. Rich, generous fruit is balanced by a clearly defined mineral backbone and firm structure, bringing both tension and impressive ageing potential. Delicious already, but with time in the bottle it will develop intriguing notes of truffle, earth and plum, offering a complexity that draws comparisons with fine Burgundy.

A wonderful partner for roast duck, slow-cooked lamb, game or earthy mushroom dishes. A wine worth giving a little time in the glass, or even decanting, to reveal its full character.
