You could describe D.O. Montilla-Moriles as the relative of Jerez-Xérès-Sherry. While it might not be as well-known among the general public, both regions share a rich tradition, producing similar wines in a variety of styles using mostly the same production methods. The resemblance between them is unmistakable, yet there are some intriguing differences to note. Notably, the wines from Montilla-Moriles cannot be labelled as "sherry." One of the region's claims to fame is Pedro Ximénez, a style created from grapes partially dried in the sun before pressing.
Albalá consistently achieves a remarkable level of quality in each of their wine releases. Their products are truly top-notch. The unique combination of sun-dried fruit and a slow, oxygen-influenced maturation process contributes to the luxurious and intensely raisined character of their wines. Everything in their production is meticulously balanced, resulting in a harmonious final product. Just one sip is all it takes to appreciate the excellence they deliver. In 2013, Don PX Convento Selección 1946 was qualified as one of the best wines in history with 100 Parker points.
The current release of Don PX Cosecha is a sweet and velvety wine, made from Pedro Ximénez grapes harvested in mid-August and laid under the sun for around seven days to concentrate all their sugars. After the press, a sweet must is obtained and left to rest in stainless steel tanks for over a year. Full of raisins, figs and caramel sweetness, the wine is seductive and hedonistic!
