Barolo Bricco delle Viole G.D. Vajra 2015

£83.50 GBP

G.D. Vajra is a producer we've stocked for many years. We love their knack for creating wines that are elegant yet approachable; ageworthy but still delicious young. And with Barolo coming off a run of stellar vintages, this is the time to get into Vajra.

Their Barolo Bricco delle Viole is made with fruit from Vajra’s oldest vineyards, planted in clay and calcareous soil, and at freshness-retaining altitude. Sustainable viticulture is practised through the growing season, right up to the point when the perfectly ripened grapes are hand-harvested, carefully selected and gently pressed.

In the winery, fermentation is slow, allowing leisurely extraction of colour and tannins from the skins. Then everything gets time to knit together over nearly four years ageing in old Slavonian oak and in bottle. The tannins soften to silk and intermingle with super-concentrated black fruit, rose-petal hints and a gorgeous lingering lick of spice.

It's a heroic Barolo that will transport you to Piedmont when drunk with the food of the region - mature cheese, truffles, mushrooms and hefty roasts.
