Colli Tortonesi Freisa DOC Braghè Claudio Mariotto 2018

£16.95 GBP

Freisa is sometimes an overlooked grape variety in Piedmont, an area dominated by big name players such as Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. When handled with care it can result in a captivating delicious wine, and this is one of the best.

Wine maker Claudio Mariotti is following his Grandfathers footsteps, working the vineyards of the Piedmont hills. In the municipalities of Tortona and Sarezzano, Claudio works exclusively with native grape varieties, including Freisa, Croatina, Barbera and Timorasso.

The Freisa grapes are hand-harvested in early October from the "Braghé" area, located near Bricco San Michele. Maceration in contact with the skins for 4 to 5 days with pump-overs. Spontaneous fermentation happens in cement tanks and it's aged in old oak for at least one year.

This is an elegant, deep red wine with a delicate floral and fresh red fruit nose. Vibrant raspberry and morello cherry on the palate with soft tannins on the finish. It tempts you in with its silky fruit, and over delivers for the price.
