Markus Huber has been working the vineyards since he took over the 250 year old family winery in the year 2000. Based in Traisental DAC, a small, wine region that was only established in 2006, he makes a number of cuvees, from many different grapes. As with most producers, Austria's hallmark grape, Gruner Veltliner takes centre stage.
This particular Gruner Veltliner is made from select parcels of vineyard that are carefully harvested, so only the best fruit is used. He allows a short period of maceration with the grape skins, to add texture and some complexity before discarding them and allowing the white wine to ferment as normal.
To preserve the varietal characteristics, fermentation is done in stainless steel at low temperatures and aged on the lees for a short three months before bottling. This brings a slightly more rounded and textured mouthfeel, and helps accentuate the richer flavours, which still take a backdrop to the wonderful freshness and varietal character this wine exhibits.
The wine's aromas are dominated by classic pepper spice, aromatic herbs, citrus and green fruit. It has wonderful texture and body, with a complex flavour profile dominated again by spice and herbs with citrus and a hint of green fruit. The acidity is crisp and fresh, the finish long and complex.
A wine that has plenty of structure that will stand up to many different foods, a great refreshing summer treat that would go down nicely as an aperitif too.
