50% White: Old Vines Fernão Pires; 50% Red: Trincadeira
This is a funky wine from organic vineyards in Lisbon, Portugal. Its a blend of white and red grapes so its like a juicy bright red wine. The vineyard is super old and has been pruned for several decades by the same individual, she is now 83 and the vines were planted before she was born.
Wine maker Andre uses ancient methods to create his Medieval wine. The white juice on skins starts fermenting spontaneously in used French oak barrels, and one week later the red juice (already fermenting) is topped up. No filtration, no temperature control, and unflitered. He also uses new portuguese Amphoras and the most modern, low intervention techniques for his traditional range. This is full of lively red fruits aromas, mainly strawberry and raspberry with hints of citrus fruits and mineral notes. In the mouth it is fruity and fresh, a very complex mix of fruits and minerality, intriguing and morish. Very funky.
