Stephen Pannell is a winemaker to watch, having trained all over the world, working with the likes of Aldo Vajra and Domain Dujac (two of our favourite producers!) Back home, in the Mclaren Vale, Pannell is using his European influence to create fresher wines (than made in his previous role as winemaker at Hardys), reducing the oak influence and allowing the true character of the fruit and the 'The Vale' terroir to shine through.
The fruit for this 100% Tempranillo wine is sourced from a cooler sub-region in McLaren Vale, where the Spanish grape variety thrives in the sandy soils. It is traditionally vinified in small open-top fermenters for ten days. The wine is then aged for twelve months in large format French and Hungarian oak vats and puncheons, 20% of which were new.
A highly perfumed, vibrant and complex wine with sweet black cherries, coffee and hints of exotic spice. Juicy and full-bodied with dusty tannins on the finish.
