Scala Ciro DOC Rosso Classico Superiore 2018

I first spotted this wine about a year ago and wanted it, now I'm pleased to say it's on our shelves. The label has fast become one of my favourites as it reminds me of my Dad. He was a racing driver, and the wine makes me think of Italian race meeting posters in the 1960's/1970's and Alfa etc.

The featured picture shows my dad with his Lotus 17 which he raced around Europe with a team of friends (2 were mechanics) with great success. The wine is also a winner! It's from the DOC of Ciro in the region of Calabria in deepest Southern Italy. This is where native grapes reign supreme and this is made from 100% Gaglioppo, the region's star variety.

The property has been in the Scala family for 200 years, the winery originally founded in 1949, my dad's birth year, was rebuilt in 2005 and they favour quality over quantity. They are also organic. It is run by Luigi Scala and his son and they work meticulously in the winery, they age this wine in concrete to preserve the freshness of the fruit. It's delicious, and a total bargain too!

Think of a cross between Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, full of perfume, elegant bright red fruit with soft dry tannins taking you over the finishing line.
