Caparzo, Sangiovese, IGT Toscana, 2019

Historic Caparzo is one of the wineries that originally contributed to the fame of Brunello di Montalcino, but had fallen into a state of disrepair by the time it was bought out by Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini in 1998. Elisabetta has invested, modernised and, with the help of winemaker Massimo Bracalente, restored the estate to its former glory.

Today, Caparzo vinifies Sangiovese to three grades: Brunello, Rosso di Montalcino and this wonderful and ever-popular little IGT Toscana. It's bright in every way: in the glass it's a ruby colour with hints of violet; in the mouth it's intensely fruity, with a warm brambly feel, loads of ripe blackcurrants and strawberries, and a persistent spicy finish.

Very fun to drink, either on its own or with pasta dishes with big rich sauces and powerful flavours.
