Cartology is a white wine from South Africa, made by Chris and Suzaan Alheit. They set out in 2011 to make some of the best white wines in South Africa, many agree they have achieved this already. It is rare for producers to reach cult status almost immediately, which has created a very tight allocation for their wines. So we are really pleased to get our hands on some.
Their winery is a small shed based near to Hemel-en-Aarde, which is far away from where they source most of their fruit, from the Western Cape. They use a skilled viticulturist, Rosa Kruger, to seek out parcels of old vine Chenin Blanc from specific sites. They make a range of single vineyard wines, some of which we have in stock, and this one, the Cartology, which is a blend of different vineyards.
This is mainly Chenin Blanc, topped up with a touch of Semillon, made in tiny quantities. It is youthful, and almost warrants decanting to open it up. It has a really complex nose, of pear, peach, pineapple and lime notes, which come through on the palate. It has balance and poise, it's concentrated but not overpowering. This is a really lovely wine.
