'Best Cabernet Franc in Show, 97 Points' - Decanter World Wine Awards
It takes a pretty special wine to achieve that kind of recognition, and special wines often come from very unique places. The Gualtallary subregion, within the Uco Valley of Mendoza in Argentina is certainly one of those rare places. Unlike other areas of Mendoza, Gualtallary wasn't planted with vines until 1992 and then only for sparkling wines. At more than 1200m altitude it receives intense sunlight but gets very cold at night which, along with the limestone-rich alluvial soils, ensures exceptional freshness in the wines.
From a site at 1350m, this Cabernet Franc is carefully raised by expert winemaker Andrea Tansini, only using second and third-use barrels to preserve the exquisite natural fruit from the grapes themselves without heavy wood flavour.
The nose shows lots of fresh black berry fruit, alongside coffee bean, orange peel and pepper. The palate is intense, with a robust structure of fine-boned tannins and superb freshness to balance the bold black fruit flavours. A superb wine that is distinctly Cabernet Franc but in a completely different manner to those from France, truly touched by this unique terroir.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
