Beaune To Be Wild, Hautes Cotes du Beaune, Germain 2020 (no sulphur)
This wild beauty has just arrived to us from the Gilbert and Phillippe Germain Domaine in Nantoux, a stone's throw from Meursault. It was in 1995 that Philippe, alongside his wife Isabelle, took over the reins of the family business, succeeding his parents.
Today, the estate has 19 hectares of vines and produces an average of 100,000 bottles per year. The estate aims to minimise treatment products in order to respect nature and therefore the cultivation of the vine is done without any weedkiller, pesticide, insecticide and with non-carcinogenic fungicides. All of their production represents a market of 70% in France, while 30% of these wines are intended for export abroad.
This particular wine is 100% Pinot Noir and was introduced by Philippe's son as a wild expression of the new generation driving away from the classics. It is aged in old French oak barrels for 8 months and has no added SO2 to preserve the freshness and drinkability.
It also has a significant dissolved CO2 content. This is voluntary to protect the wine during its years in the bottle, it is enough just to carafe it energetically to chase away the surplus of gas and thus obtain a silky wine.
On the nose this wine is clean with a touch of freshly picked red berries. Palate has ripe red cherries, baking spice and a hint of smokey wood. Long and silky finish and very easy drinking wine!
