One of Montalcino's shining lights, Biondi-Santi has consistently been producing exceptional wines for centuries. The estate is now with the sixth and seventh generations, steered by the guiding hand of Christopher Descours (owner of esteemed Champagne houses Charles Heidsieck, Piper Heidsieck and Rare). He bought a controlling stake in 2016, and is investing in the modernisation of vineyards and winery.
The 2009 Brunello is a phenomenally well-built wine now entering its drinking window. The fruit is darkening beautifully, the acidity woven in and the texture becoming softer and richer with every passing day. Developed notes of liquorice, balsam and forest floor have very much joined the party. The finish just keeps on throwing out new surprises. Extraordinary now, but still with easily a decade to run.
