Birichino was founded in Santa Cruz in 2008 by Alex Krause and John Locke. Bringing a combined forty years of winemaking experience in California, France, Italy and beyond.The grapes are sourced from family-owned, meticulously farmed vineyards planted in the 19th and early 20th century. They focus on mnimal intervention making use of native yeasts and favouring stainless steel or neutral barrels, minimal racking and avoiding filtration wherever possible. The aim is to create wines that are delicious, with a perfect balance of perfume, poise and puckishness.
Watermelon, hibiscus and stone fruits dominate the perfume, highlighting the punchy Cinsault. small quantities of fresh and vibrant Vermentino from the Napa side of Carneros add some much needed zest. Fermented in stainless steel to dryness from a gentle direct press in 2020, the Vin Gris is a perfect summer companion.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
