Another Blank Bottle wine, another story. We bought this wine initially, let's be honest, because the name sounded funny, and the bottle looks cool.
The wine is made from the Verdelho grape, it is one of Pieter's medium bodied styles, it has tangy citrus fruits with an underlying richness. It also has hints of herbs, nuts and spice with a great salinity. We've had a previous vintage of this which was much fatter, maybe this will gain richness with time, it's beautifully balanced as it is.
Aasvoel is the Afrikaans word for vulture. Pieter found a farmer with a plot of great looking Verdelho fruit in Stellenbosch. The plot is small, not enough for anybody else to share. So Pieter sat nearby the vineyard, watching like a vulture, to make sure he secured the fruit.
Once again Pieter has made something interesting from an unfashionable grape variety.
