No wine has done more than Montus to put Madiran's hero red variety, Tannat, on the world wine map. For this, we have Madiran pioneer Alain Brumont to thank.
Alain acquired Montus in 1979, replanted the vineyard himself and got straight to work with the Tannat grapes he subsequently (sustainably) grew. His early vintages were made using such rudimentary equipment that he became a laughing stock among local producers. But there's no doubting who's had the last laugh.
The 2000 Montus is a sublime expression of Tannat - dark and dense, deep and brooding, powerful and tannic. Time has smoothed out every rough edge, so now the lush blackberry and black cherry fruit is enveloped by liquorice, cloves and spices.
Open the bottle at least an hour before serving and, if your tastes go that way, drink with red meat to experience a legendary food and wine pairing.
