Castas Escondidas Douro Tinto, Casa Ferreirinha 2018

£44.75 GBP

Casa Ferreirinha was the first Douro producer dedicated entirely to making table wines, rather than Port. Winemaker Luís Sottomayor now continues this practice, creating wines with a vibrant freshness.

'Castas Escondidas' translates as 'hidden varieties' and showcases some of the lesser known grape varieties of the Douro Valley: Touriga Fêmea, Tinta Francisca, Marufo and Bastardo (the Portuguese name for the Jura's Trousseau.) Grapes were sourced from a combination of Casa Ferreirinha owned vineyards and trusted growers, with a significant proportion of fruit from old, low-yielding, field-blend plots in the blend.

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel before the wine is moved to used French oak barrels and aged in cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for around 18 months.

Typically Douro with intense aromas of ripe red and black fruits with spicy notes of pepper and cinnamon and hints of balsamic. Smooth and polished tannins with a bright acidity for a long and elegant finish.
