Charles Frey Gewurztraminer Symbiose 2020

Originally hailing from Switzerland, the Frey family established themselves in Dambach-la-Ville in the 18th century with aspirations of vine cultivation. Starting with a mere 1.5 hectares in Dambach-la-Ville, their early viticulture was intertwined with polyculture, aided by family cattle. By 1958, Charles and Jean-Pierre Frey received 0.75 hectares each from their father, leading Charles and his wife Renée to venture into exclusive winegrowing, resulting in the first bottles in 1963. A cellar and wine-tasting space emerged in 1968, further growing to accommodate the enterprise's then-4-hectare harvest. In 1997, Dominique, now joined by his wife Nathalie, embraced biodynamic farming, turning the estate into an Alsace biodynamic pioneer. Overcoming initial scepticism, their dedication endured and Julien, the third generation, entered the scene introducing fresh ideas. A new bioclimatic storehouse arose in 2010, marking a significant stride. With 14 hectares today the journey continues with the addition of Thiébaud, the youngest, shaping the future commercial direction.

In the 2020 vintage, the grapes exhibited a touch more ripeness compared to the previous year, resulting in a slight increase in residual sugar in the final wine. This year's production was marked by drought and high summer temperatures, necessitating vigilant vineyard management, particularly in terms of canopy control, to ensure quality. Early harvests were crucial to preserve acidity and counterbalance the heightened sugars in the end product. The outcome is a mature and aromatic Gewürztraminer, boasting vibrant aromatics and a lusciously invigorating palate. Infused with a hint of spice and a subtle tannic edge, it harmonizes excellently with boldly flavoured dishes or an apple tarte tatin.
