2016 was a dream Bordeaux vintage - a long summer of hot days and cool nights, gently nudging the red grapes towards perfect levels of ripeness at harvest. This half-bottle from Château des Antonins, just south of Graves, showcases the virtues of the vintage exquisitely.
The Château has been in the hands of the de Roquefeuil family since the 1850s, with the recent developments including a move to sustainable viticulture and the return from New Zealand of prodigal son Antoine to take up the post of head winemaker in 2016.
The Roqufeuils' Cabernet and Merlot vines are planted in clay gravel soils, giving power and fruit purity to its red wines. These characters were teased out in the winery to create a gorgeously deep ruby wine brimming with concentrated fruit flavours - red plums, black cherries and blackcurrant, with just a touch of spice.
It's such a layered wine and the tannins are so smooth and supple. A real pleasure to drink and one to be savoured in small doses.
