Domaines des Cognettes are a sixth generation family business and our friends. They are based in the top quality sub region of Clisson in Muscadet, near the river Loire. Vincent and his brother Stephane took over from their parents in 1990. They wanted to continue making wines with minimum intervention and farmed organically since 2009. The soil is complex in this area, there is enough warmth to give healthy grapes, but it is a marginal climate so work can be tough.
The fruit is harvested by hand, the wines are fermented naturally with wild yeasts and they are aged on their lees for extended periods of time. All of these factors result in a light bodied, but deep and layered flavours, wines which have a good finish and are memorable, and the alcohol is capped at a drinkable 12%. The Clos des Choffardieres is one of their upper range wines, and is now six years old, but is showing really well, with plenty of life left in it. It isn't everyday you can drink these unique wines, so grab one while you can and start shucking some oysters.
