The Bordeaux varieties have famously found a very happy second home in the free-draining Gimblett Gravels of Hawke’s Bay. This svelte and fragrant expression of the style is now drinking beautifully.
The blend is 60% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The result is a plush, opulent wine packed with warming cassis, plums and dark cherries, plus spicy cedar, vanilla, mocha and hints of pencil shavings. Tertiary notes of leather and tobacco are starting to join the party, even while the tannins remain structured and firm.
