Chateau Sociando Mallet in the Haut Medoc is one of the most highly esteemed Cru Bourgeois estates in Bordeaux, regularly outperforming its classed growth competition. Located just north of the Saint Estephe appellation in the village of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne on the gravel soils on the banks of the Gironde.
The Grand Vin from Sociando Mallet is esteemed for its long ageing potential, but can be a rather challenging wine in youth. Its little sibling, La Demoiselle, provides much of the same classic claret character but in a more approachable package.
In the excellent 2019 vintage the blend is 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% of the wine was aged in new French oak for 12 months.
Youthful and vibrant on the nose with rich dark fruits (blackcurrant, elderberry, black cherry) and floral hints (bergamot, violet) and a touch of paprika spice. Full bodied and robust with plenty of ripe tannins as you would expect from this chateau, but already drinkable especially with a little aeration in a decanter. Long and refined in the finish, with elegant spices and mineral notes taking over from the fruit.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
