Caroline Meurée & Hervé Malinge are a young winemaking couple who studied in Bordeaux, they are not from the Loire, but this did not stop them buying Domain des Sables Verts in Saumur Champigny, and embarking on their first vintage in 2019. They have sixteen hectares spread across five communes, which they intend to farm organically. Fifteen hectares are planted with Cabernet Franc and just one with Chenin Blanc.
We are big fans of the Chenin Blanc grape, it is really versatile, there are fantastic examples from bone dry all the way through to luscious sweet wines. This example is a complex wine, combining dried fruits, and savoury notes, with tangy acidity.
The 2019 vintage was small due to extreme frost and drought, which stressed the vines. But this did concentrate the sugars in the resulting harvest, producing grapes with exceptional quality. The fruit for this wine comes from three parcels, two of which are aged in oak for four months, the third is vinified in steel. This is a sustainable carbon neutral wine, which happens to taste really good. We think this is a winemaking pair to keep an eye on.
