Vermentino… What an underrated grape variety! For those who like Albarino, Gruner Veltliner, or even Sauvignon Blanc, this may be a new direction for you. Vermentino is an easy, fresh and uplifting wine but it also has great complexity. A clever wine, versatile and good for quaffing or food matching.
It has a fruit profile of lime, grapefruit and green apple. Vermentino has high levels of phenols which create a subtle bitterness on the finish. This can present as citrus peel or sometimes as green almond. Delicate floral notes are also common. It doesn’t have a spritzy or aggressive acidity and there is a subtle oily richness which lends to the weight, enabling food pairing with bigger and fatter flavours.
This 100% Vermentino is held up as a prime example of true Sardinian wine making. From Giuseppe Gabbas; the great tradition bearer who manages a 30 hectare estate of vineyards and olive groves in the heart of Sardinia. The granite terrain, of the valley, runs very deep and is capable of conserving the water often needed in periods of drought. The Vermentino grows on slopes facing the sea where they can benefit from the additional reflected light. The wine is aged in steel tank and bottle for about 5 months.
