Gomez Cruzado, founded in 1886, may have a lot of history but their wines certainly do not rest on their laurels. With vines planted in the high Sierra Cantabria hills up to 80 years old they have outstanding fruit to work with and in their bodega in Haro they combine the traditional oak ageing of Rioja with contemporary innovations such as the use of concrete eggs for fermentation.
Made from vines with a minimum age of 50 years, Honorable is dense, powerful and complex. Largely Tempranillo (around 80%) with the remainder Graciano, Garnacha, Mazuela and Viura. The wines are aged for 18 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels to add depth and soften the tannins. Dark and spicy on the nose, with roasted plums, black cherry and a touch of cinnamon and coffee. The palate is very full-bodied, with plenty of ripe and mouth-filling tannins, liqueur-like black fruits and oak. This is drinking deliciously now but certainly has a long life ahead of it.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful.
