An incredibly special wine from the Sao Miguel winery, this limited release of just 4000 bottles is produced from the first vines planted at the estate to local variety Trincadeira. Trincadeira has been somewhat overlooked compared to other red grapes in the region, but is worthy of recognition in its own right - its paler colour and lighter body no longer seen as negatives in a wine world more keen to celebrate wines of balance, elegance and freshness.
No new or small oak is used for this wine, instead aging for 18 months in a single 5000l used French oak foudre, to help flavour and tannin development without oak flavour overpowering the natural aroma of the fruit.
The aroma is complex and very beautiful, with notes of wild thyme, fresh and dried red berries, elder and subtle smokiness. Medium-bodied with layers of silky tannin, delicious red fruit and savoury notes. Very refined finish, with good freshness and no hard edges.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful.
