What a treat this is, and has literally just arrived in our Kemp Town shop. Isole e Olena is one of the great Tuscan producers, particularly well known for their red wines, made from the Sangiovese grape. We have an allocation of their white wine, which they make from Chardonnay, in bottles and magnums, it is considered to be one of the finest Chardonnays in Italy.
Isole e Olena came about in the 1950s when the De Marchi family bought the Isole and Olena sites and merged them, they have hundreds of years of winemaking experience between them. The first vintage of this particular wine was 1987, after which in 1989, a new vineyard was planted with five different Burgundy clones, the results of which appeared with the first bottling in 1994. They have excelled with this wine ever since.
The wine is fermented in oak, then aged in oak on its lees for ten months, with occasional stirring to give it more body and texture. This is great Chardonnay, it is beautiful now but will age for many years. It is rich, powerful and packs a punch, but also has elegance, balance and poise, this is my style of wine!
