This is the second wine of St-Estephe icon Château Phélan Ségur, famous for the ageing potential of its precise, structured wines. The vineyards sit close to the Gironde estuary, sheltered from harsh winters and hot summers, giving the vines ample opportunity to root deep into the free-draining gravel soils.
La Croix Bonis comes from carefully selected parcels around the Château, with a far higher proportion of Merlot than the Grand Vin. This results in a big, round, supple wine driven by dark fruits, lifted by herbal notes but held in check by fleshy tannins. The finish is very focused and persistent.
Like its big brother, La Croix Bonis needs a few years to come into its own. The 2015 is now drinking beautifully.
