This is a rare treat, we have just taken the last few bottles, which will probably be consumed by the team! It is a top class Austrian Pinot Noir, a style of wine which we are finding more and more popular.
This particular one has a bit of bottle age on it, so has developed some really interesting flavours. Fred Loimer, the producer, has 80 hectares around the Kamptal region of Austria. He makes a range of different wines including, as you might expect, some using Gruner Veltiner or Riesling grapes, but also makes quality red wines such as this. He focuses on getting optimum ripeness in the vineyard, then ferments completely dry in the winery. He is certified organic and biodynamic and has been for some time. This wine is named after the place the fruit comes from, Gumpoldkirschen, which is just south of Vienna.
The wines from this region tend to be big, powerful and long lived. This has been aged in large old oak barrels for about 6 months to add depth and to mellow the wine. It starts off with bright red fruit flavours, but also has an earthiness and plenty of spice and grip on the finish. This is a bit of a treat and will be great with a roast sunday lunch.
