Maison les Alexandrins Syrah 2018

£12.75 GBP

It's sometimes hard to find affordable, drinkable northern Rhone reds. The current wines available are often wines to keep for a few years, or priced beyond an everyday drinking budget. So we were very pleased to find this tasty, affordable Syrah from Maison Les Alexandrins.

This is a collaboration between Nicholas Jaboulet, winemaker Guillaume Sorrel and viticulturist Alexandre Caso, all three bring their expertise to the company, which was established in 2015. Their aim is to purchase parcels of fruit from top quality domaines, then make the wine in their newly built winery. The fruit for their basic Syrah comes from young vines in the northern Cotes du Rhone area.

2018 was a small vintage but provided concentrated, generous fruit. Part of the wine was aged for 6 months in stainless steel to preserve freshness, the other part was aged in oak to soften the tannins. 5% Vioginer is added to also soften the wine. It has a lovely aroma of dark berries, the palate is big, but balanced and soft, this offers a lot of class for the price. Class in a glass. We chilled it for a bit before drinking.
