Massa Colli Tortonesi Barbera DOC Monleale 2015

The leading producer of southeast Piemonte's Colli Tortonesi, Walter Massa is perhaps best known for his white wines made from the Timorasso grape. However he is also one of the great champions of the Barbera grape, helping bring it out of the shadow of Nebbiolo by producing world-class ageworthy examples.

From several plots in his home village of Monleale, the oldest planted in 1965, farmed without the use of pesticides or herbicides. The hand-harvested grapes are treated with the lightest of touches in the cellar, no yeasts, enzymes or other adjuncts are added and SO2 is only used in minimal quantities at bottling. Monleale ages for around 2 years in used barrels and is then aged in bottle until Walter deems the particular vintage ready to drink.

This has a very complex nose, with lots of spicy and earthy notes alongside vivid black and red berries and cherries. On the palate it is full and deep, with plum and tobacco wrapped in strong but refined tannin. Barbera's typical wonderful freshness is on display in the finish, which is bright and long - perfect for a mushroom risotto or porchetta.
