Paolo Caciorgna is a respected winemaker and consultant, working with many estates in Italy, he is also the man behind this Etna Rosso, called Mt Etna Rosso Ciauria, Pietro Caciorgna 2020. This was a recent find for us, we couldn't resist its immediate appeal.
This sun-kissed wine is made from 100% organic Nerello Mascalese fruit, an indigenous Sicilian grape. It comes from a tiny parcel of really old vines, grown at high altitude on volcanic soil. The wine is fermented in steel then aged for six months in french oak before being bottled.
When our friend introduced us to it he said just wait until you taste this. We weren't disappointed. The bright red berry fruits leap out of the glass, it's a really pretty wine, light bodied, juicy and very soft. It's almost too easy to drink, but just checks itself with a light grip on the finish. This is a very drinkable wine, not that far removed from a decent Pinot Noir in style.
