We are huge fans of Portuguese wine superstar Dirk Niepoort, and for good reason. The winery is an independant family business stretching back five generations. In the late 1990s Dirk officially took over the family estate and his passion for wines and the humble respect and curiosity for the Douro terroir defined Niepoort spirit over the last two decades and is a constant inspiration and challenge to the team.
The philosophy at Niepoort is that the colour of the Port should be inspired by the "ruby stone". Ruby ages an average of 3 years and the grapes come from old vineyards in Cima Corgo region of Douro Valley. Niepoort Ruby is fresh, young and fruity, in no way over bearing. An expressive Port with great character that keeps well for several years. No decanting is necessary since the wine contains no sediment.
Ruby Dum is classically foot trodden and fermented in granite lagares, it is then aged in large old vats but retains its youthful, strong character. Dominated by red cherries and plums with great freshness from ageing in large wooden vats in the cool cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia. The label takes inspiration from Alice in Wonderland which is apparent in the transformative elements of the flavour. A great value Port.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
