Dirk Niepoort started a project to make Cool Natural wines, which are fresh and very drinkable, hence they come in a one litre bottle. They have to be free from chemicals, low sulphur and fun. Other producers have joined this project, there are several white wines, reds and now a Port being made. We are big fans, they are quality wines, but made to drink and not over analyse.
Ruby port is the fruiter style on the Port spectrum, it has a vibrant red colour as the name suggests, it is not oxidised like a Tawny, they are generally like a fruity, bold red wine with some extra sweetness. They are equally delicious when served chilled as an aperitif, or at room temperature at the end of an evening, with cheese or dark chocolate, the resulting sleepless night will be worth it.
The Trudy is made from 30 to 80 year old plants growing in the Douro valley, over six different grape varieties make up the blend. The fruit is hand harvested, then foot trodden and fermented in traditional concrete lagars. The resulting wine is aged in old, large oak barrels, and is a blend of different vintages, the end product has an average age of 3 years.
It has a delicious purity, there is plenty of primary fruit, cherries and plums abound, the welcome acidity keeps the wine fresh, and it's all held together by fine, soft tannins.
Our message to you Trudy, is you are very drinkable!
