Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots, Domaine Henri Gouges 2015

£52.50

Domaine Henri Gouges has been one of the most important domaines in Nuits St Georges for over a century. With small production from vines in six of the village's 1er Cru vineyards, Gouges wines highly sought-after and increasingly difficult to get your hands on.

One of the best-known aspects of Gouges wines is their ageworthiness. Under the aegis of fourth-generation winemaker Grégory Gouges, they are increasingly approachable in youth... yet will continue to improve for a good two decades.

Most of the domaine's 1er Cru holdings are in vineyards to the south of Nuits St Georges. In fact, Les Chaignots is their only site in the northern part of the appellation, towards Vosne-Romanée. The terroir here - hillside plantings on clay, limestone and alluvium - produces softer, more approachable wines known for their subtlety and delicacy.

Gouges' outstanding 2015 Les Chaignots is medium-bodied and succulent, with ripe red cherry and cranberry leading to a structured finish built on fine-grained tannins.
