Nyetimber is widely regarded as being consistently one of the top producers of english sparkling wines. We worked with them many years ago, but for whatever reason haven't had them in stock, until now, they are back in! They are based in Sussex, only make sparkling wines no still wines, and only make wines from their own estate fruit.
They planted their vineyards in 1988, so they are well established, and when ownership and a change of winemaker happened in 2006, the quality of the wines skyrocketed. We recently tasted through the range, and now have some on our shelves including the Blanc de Blancs and single vineyard Tillington wine.
One of the stars of the show was the Demi Sec Cuvee Cherie, named after the winemaker Cherie Spriggs. The off dry style will be familiar to some Champagne drinkers, but it is a very rare sight in England, it really works. It's a multi vintage bottling of Chardonnay, and includes between 20-30% reserve wine. This helps with the depth of flavour and adds complexity. Although there is some residual sweetness, you don't really feel it because it is so balanced.
Fresh fruit flavours come through, with a touch of honey and great freshness on the finish. This would make a wonderful wine to enjoy in the garden on its own, or as an aperitif or with fruit based desserts.
