Off the Beaten Track Trio (3)

Many of the most enjoyable, and certainly best value, wine experiences come from trying something a little bit out there. We have brought together this mixed case to celebrate little-known grape varieties and places not on the typical wine radar, with 10% off if you need extra encouragement!

Terra d'Alter Verdelho 2021, Alentejo, Portugal - £13.95

The grape variety Verdelho is most associated with the fortified wines of Madeira, but it is growing in popularity as a dry table wine both in mainland Portugal and internationally (some excellent examples come from South Africa and Australia). Terra d'Alter grow their Verdelho in the Monte Barrao vineyard in southern Portugal's Alentejo region, then ferment the juice at low temperature in stainless steel. This produce a delicious dry white with aromatic tropical fruit character or passionfruit and honeydew melon on the nose, a nice weight on the palate and a finish marked by crisp limey acidity. It makes an excellent partner for grilled chicken with lemon and garlic alongside seafood dishes.

Rezabal Txakoli Rose 2022, Basque Country, Spain - £14.99

Founded by a pair of folk singers, the Rezabal winery sits among 20 hectares of vineyards cooled by the winds from the Cantabrian Sea. Their wonderful rose is made from the local Hondarrabi Beltza grape (try saying that after a few glasses!) and, common for Txakoli, is bottled with a little trapped gas for a light spritz. It has a wonderful aroma, full of fresh fruit and floral notes with a twist of wild herbs. The palate is light-bodied and dry but with plenty of intensity of flavour in the form of strawberries, raspberries, white pepper and mint. It makes a great bottle to drink with nibbles at a party, or try it with sushi for a unique and delicious match.

Vina Progreso Overground Cabernet Franc 2018, Rio de la Plata, Uruguay - £19.99

The great red grape of the Loire Valley, Cabernet Franc, has here made a transatlantic journey to the Uruguayan village of Progreso. A long slow ripening close to the Atlantic ocean and clay-limestone soils (similar to those of Saumur) are key to the excellent quality of fruit worked on by winemaker Gabriel Pisano. Fermentation with native yeast and a long maceration on the skins ensures the translation of beautiful grapes into delicious wine. This is a red with wonderfully intense berry fruits, hints of cocoa and pepper and silky refined tannins. It has a long finish with a twist of orange peel and allspice.
