This wine comes from the Iblei mountains in the south east of the island. The Pianogrillo estate is named after the ancient family who run it. They also possess a vast olive grove and only started making wine commercially in recent times, with many of their vines having been planted a little over ten years ago.
This wine is made from indigenous Frappato grapes that are grown on limestone and clay soils at 480m above sea level. The vineyards are exposed to cooling winds that come through most evenings during the growing season, tempering the hot temperatures, and aiding in the ripening process. All their farm operations are organic and sustainable.
This wine is fermented in stainless steel before being transferred into small oak barriques to mature for a year or so before being bottled. The wine is vibrant and fresh with a wonderful perfumed aroma that is both floral and fruity. The oak usage gives a subtle sweet smoke character, along with some spice too.
On the palate, it is fresh and juicy with a medium body and soft tannins. It’s really well balanced, with those smoky notes adding a touch of complexity without detracting from the wonderful fruit profile. Whack it in the fridge and drink it lightly chilled with a charcuterie-laden pizza or grilled meats and veg.
