Pilcrow is a Napa Valley winery founded in 2014 by Sara and Jonah Beer, inspired by the region's iconic wines of the 1950s through 1970s. They focus on crafting Cabernet Sauvignon from distinct mountain vineyards, including Archer & Byrd on Mt. Veeder, Ghost Block in Yountville, and Granite Lake on Howell Mountain. Emphasizing organic farming and traditional, low-intervention winemaking, Pilcrow produces wines that are high-toned, savoury, and lower in alcohol, aiming to authentically express each vineyard's unique terroir.
The 2019 Hillclimber from Mt. Veeder is a deep ruby hue, nearly opaque in the glass. Its expressive bouquet reveals aromas of plum, rose stem, tobacco spice, and subtle herbal notes—an elegant and nuanced profile. Unlike the bold, fruit-forward Napa Cabernets that lean into dessert spices, this wine takes a different path, offering vibrant red fruit flavours of tart plum, currant, cranberry, and the distinctive Icelandic crowberry. Bright, mouth-watering acidity defines the palate, leading to a savoury finish with hints of pink peppercorn, tobacco spice, and a tangy edge, all supported by fine, gravelly tannins.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome. Having tasted them she was spot on with her comments on each bottle. I would highly recommend anyone to use this shop.
