I spotted this rose when it was first released in Austria and knew we needed to stock it, especially as Henry is often referred to as the King of Brighton!
It is made by Gerhard Pittnauer and his wife Brigitte who are based in Gols, which is part of the Burgenland in Eastern Austria. Gerhard took over the family estate at the age of just 18, the early introduction seems to have served him well, as it didn't take him long to become a very well regarded winemaker.
He considers his role as a guiding hand, using minimal intervention to let each wine express its terroir. They farm biodynamically, and don't use any chemicals in the vineyard. They built their new winery in the middle of the vineyards to preserve freshness, and even use refrigerated vans to store harvested fruit during hot vintages, before going to press. Admirable attention to detail which is reflected in the quality of all their wines.
This pretty pink is a dream. It's an organic blend of Blaufränkisch, St Laurent and Zweigelt. It undergoes spontaneous fermentation which lasts for 6 weeks, then it spends three months on its lees before being fined, filtered and bottled.
The result is a lip smacking rose full of ripe summer berry fruits, candy floss and a fresh zippy acidity keeping it well balanced. Perfect for drinking by itself or would work well with almost any food. It's definitely fit for a king.
