FIO Weine is a fascinating project between 3 great people. Two fantastic young winemakers, in Philipp Kettern and Daniel Niepoort, are being guided by the legendary Dirk Niepoort. They have equal shares of this new venture and all are contributing to some superb wines.
Phillip and Daniel are based in the Mosel Valley in Germany, where they have access to some wonderful Riesling fruit. Both Daniel and Phillip make wines in their own right, this joint project has the aim of making dry Riesling with a sense for purpose and fun.
The Piu Piu is an unusual wine, it is a naturally made sparkling Riesling wine. There are plenty of sparkling Riesling wines made, we just don't seem to see many in the UK. This wine is recognisable as Riesling, but with a lovely, fine fizz.
It is a blend of wines from the infamous Piesporter Goldtropfchen vineyards, all the fruit is from grand cru sites. Part of the blend is barrel-aged for two years, and part is kept in steel. The completed blend carries out its second fermentation, naturally and gently in bottle. The natural fermentation creates carbonic acid, which eliminates the need to add sulphur to stabilise the wine. This experimental wine is truly ‘natural’ and is unfiltered, so it will have a slightly cloudy presentation, but this does not distract from the vibrant, fresh fruit flavours.
And it has a delightful chubby bird on the label, so what's not to like!
