Primitivo di Salento Mocavero 2018
Primitivo seems to be a popular grape whatever the weather. We keep expecting the sales to dip for this rich, spicy variety during the hot weather, but it is remaining popular. This is a new addition to the shelves, from Puglia Salento and made by Francesco Moncavero. Although this is powerful, it has a lot of juicy cherry fruit which keeps it upbeat. Mocavero manages to keep freshness and elegance in a wine which can normally move towards high alcohol and sweet stewed fruit. The vines are grown in the traditional method which is a low gnarly Albarello bush on light sandy soil. This method offers protection in windy areas. It is made organically but uncertified. The wine is vinified in steel to encourage more freshness. This works really well with roasted food of any sort and cheese boards, it's very morish.
