Distilleria Quaglia has been through four generations of evolution and innovation, now resting at a comfortable point between tradition and innovation. Perhaps best known for exquisite single-varietal grappa, Quaglia has recently expanded its repertoire in some interesting directions, such as this exquisitely refined orange brandy.
It's a liqueur produced using the classic method, infusing the base spirit - aged Italian brandy - with fresh orange peel and spices for over two months. The result is a delicate medley of lifted citrus, spice and herbal nuances, rounded out by an undercurrent of sweet, smooth vanilla. Zesty and oh-so festive.
I made Crêpes Suzettes on Pancake Day using a splash of Quaglia Orange Brandy mixed with freshly squeezed orange and lemon juice, and it worked perfectly. The brandy is delicious on its own too: fine, aromatic, tangy with orange zest and not too sweet or syrupy - a wonderful hybrid of brandy and liqueur.
